One of my good friends recently retired from the Guard, a flight surgeon with multiple deployments to Iraq and a deployment to Afghanistan. Unfortunately, due to travel I couldn’t make his retirement ceremony, but we hooked up this Monday thanks to the mighty RV10. The Doc live in the Poland of Poland Springs fame. The Lewiston Auburn airport is a mere five-minute car ride from his house and only 45 minutes via RV10 from Franklin County. With winter storms scheduled for the late afternoon we were definitely on a timeline, but made it with no worries.
The flight over Mount Washington was majestic as snow covering the access road and Tuckerman’s Ravine. The Lewiston Auburn Airport is great, two intersecting runways 4/22 and 17/35 both in good shape and a clean and modern FBO.
After Doc and I grabbed a great lunch at MACs and hung out with Greyhounds for a little while it was time to head to be the storm. Blasting out of KLEW a 300 ft/min rate of climb netted 140KIAS and 8000 ft before we reached Mount Washinton. After enjoying the view of Mount Washington, I began a gradual decent back down to 6 to keep below the clouds. Six thousand also had the benefit of getting us out of a 30 kt head wind.

Checking in with Burlington Approach the warned us of precipitation west of Franklin County and headed toward the field, the race was on. But thanks to the mighty RV10 and some decent flight planning we arrived for the overhead runway 18 KFSO about 5 minutes ahead of the snow.

Another fun trip and chance to keep up with friends’ thanks RV.
