{"id":710,"date":"2023-01-02T11:52:40","date_gmt":"2023-01-02T16:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mikeflightblog.duckdns.org\/?p=710"},"modified":"2023-01-02T12:01:00","modified_gmt":"2023-01-02T17:01:00","slug":"brake-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikesflightblog.org\/index.php\/2023\/01\/02\/brake-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"Brake Failure!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our first emergency n the RV10!&nbsp; This weekend I flew the RV10 down and back to Portsmouth NH to pick up my daughter so she could spend a weekend at home without having to drive 4 hours each way.&nbsp; The weather on Friday was clear but very high winds out of the west.&nbsp; This made from the highest ground speeds we have ever seen, over 240 kts!.&nbsp; But of course, the return trip was a bit slower\ud83d\ude0a. &nbsp;The drop off trip on Sunday ended up being even more excited.&nbsp; The winds had dropped but storms were moving in to the area with rain and ceiling in some areas down to 1500 feet.&nbsp; Because of this we left a little early and were able to beat most to the weather for the flight to PSM.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But while the winds had dropped, they were still from the south east meaning a long taxi in and then 2-mile taxi back to depart on runway 16 after dropping Margaret off at Port Air the FBO on the southern corner of this from SAC Base.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"937\" src=\"https:\/\/mikeflightblog.duckdns.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Weather-1024x937.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikesflightblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Weather-1024x937.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mikesflightblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Weather-300x275.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mikesflightblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Weather-768x703.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mikesflightblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Weather.jpg 1059w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While flying through the rain and picking my way through the clouds I noticed that the plastic lines on the co-pilots right brake were empty (clear).&nbsp; This indicated to me that there was no brake fluid left in this side of the system.&nbsp; I didn\u2019t want test the brakes airborne in case I did have one application left \u2013 so I just left it and thought out a plan to land without brakes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"949\" height=\"713\" src=\"https:\/\/mikeflightblog.duckdns.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikesflightblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image.png 949w, https:\/\/mikesflightblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/mikesflightblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-768x577.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 949px) 100vw, 949px\" \/><figcaption>Brake Lines Empty<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The good part was that the winds were directly down runway 19 at FSO so cross wind wasn\u2019t a concern.&nbsp; I self-briefed the plan was for a min speed touch down at the approach end of the runway \u2013 brake check on the runway \u2013 then taxi clear of the runway using the rudder for a shut down on the ramp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It actually went as briefed.\u00a0 We touched down in the numbers \u2013 found we had no brakes, but were able to clear the runway using left rudder.\u00a0 But once clear I found I couldn\u2019t stop the turn and instead of adding power \u2013 which might have worked to put more wind across the tail \u2013 I chose to ground loop it and shut down in the grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"729\" height=\"409\" src=\"https:\/\/mikeflightblog.duckdns.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Off-runway.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-715\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikesflightblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Off-runway.png 729w, https:\/\/mikesflightblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Off-runway-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While this did end up requiring a few hours of repair week to trouble shoot and replace the O-rings in the brake cylinders it was a great learning experience and ended well.
